MLH Optimizes Operating Room Capacity and Utilization
Published Sep 25
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is launching a system-wide initiative focused on improving OR capacity, utilization, and transparency across all hospitals. This project leverages new and existing Epic tools and workflows designed to make scheduling smoother and more predictable for surgeons, practice managers, and clinic schedulers, while supporting timely patient access to surgery.
What’s Changing for Surgeon Clinics
Over the coming months, surgeon clinics will begin using three new tools that directly support day-to-day scheduling operations and improve communication with centralized scheduling teams:
OR Marketplace - A transparent, real-time view of available OR time—making it easier to locate open OR times and request time to schedule your cases efficiently.
Block Reminders - AI-driven nudges that help identify unused rstime early, prompting timely release so you and your colleagues have meaningful lead times to fill newly opened times.
Surgeon Block Scorecards - Automated monthly scorecards delivered via email or through Epic, giving surgeons clear insight into their block utilization trends.
Why This Matters
These tools are designed to:
Maximize OR efficiency, reduce delays and improve patient access
Improve transparency into the OR schedule and enhance relationships with surgeon offices
Strengthen communication between clinic staff and hospital scheduling
Support data-driven block management decisions
What’s Next?
These new tools go live on November 2, 2026. All clinic schedulers are required to attend one virtual training session (30-minute time commitment). Practice managers and admins are encouraged to attend for visibility. These invites will be sent out to all clinic staff, please RSVP for the one you plan to attend.
