COVID-19 Update: Contrast Media Shortage

Dear Providers,

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided to a large degree, we recognize that we are not yet out of the woods. The latest COVID effect is a shortage of contrast media, which stems from the closure of GE Healthcare's plant in Shanghai, China due to COVID lockdowns.

In response to this global shortage, our contrast supplier, Bracco, has placed customers on an allocation equal to 90 percent of our recent order quantities. Our Supply Chain team is anticipating eight to 12 weeks of supply disturbances.

Just as we navigated PPE shortages in the early days of the pandemic, we will approach this limitation on our contrast supplies with the same degree of attention and with a focus on maintaining quality and safety. We are monitoring contrast supplies at each of our facilities daily. Dr. Randall Davis is working with radiologists to reduce contrast utilization, including ordering non-contrast CTs when possible. MRPC will also review all outpatient orders and will work with primary care providers to shift to non-contrasted studies where it makes sense to do so. Similarly, Dr. Michael McDonald is working with cardiologists to reduce contrast utilization.

GE Healthcare is beginning to make progress in returning to previous production levels. In the meantime, we are taking prudent and appropriate steps to manage our utilization. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
