Rounding Lists FAQ

printable version (PDF)

Where do I find a rounding list in Cerner?
Cerner has Visit Relationship and Provider Group lists to organize your patients for rounding. The physician must create these lists and activate them while logged in to Cerner. The lists will populate on the Patient List tab, beside the Inbox tab.

Why can't the Nursing Unit staff print my rounding list as they did in the past?
The Visit List draws from the physician's relationship with the patient. A nurse or unit secretary would not have an attending, admitting, or consulting relationship. Therefore, the list would not populate under a non-physician login.

What is the difference between a Visit Relationship List and a Provider Group List?
Both populate based on your relationship (Admitting, Attending, Consulting, etc.) to the patient. You choose relationships when creating a Visit List. Visit Lists show admit date, discharge date, and LOS along with standard patient identifiers.

The Provider Group Lists have been pre-defined to list patients where any physician in the group has a relationship of admitting, attending, or consulting physician. These relationships cannot be modified by the end user. The Provider Group list has fewer columns of data and does not display admit date, discharge date or LOS. Methodist has submitted this to Cerner as an enhancement to oneChart.

How do I build a Visit List?
Create and activate the list. Once these steps are done, the lists will display upon login unless they are purposely deleted by the end user.

  1. Log in and click the tab labeled Patient List.
  2. Click the List Maintenance icon (wrench) on the main toolbar.
  3. The Modify window opens. Click the New button.
  4. The Patient List Type window opens. Click Visit Relationship then click the Next button.
  5. Select Visit Relationships. The most common selections are Admitting Physician, Attending Physician, and Consulting Physician. These selections, along with physician designations made during admission or registration, determine which patients appear on the Visit List.
Choose additional relationships as needed to match your workflow. For example, if you routinely open individual charts and declare a relationship of on call physician, select On-Call Physicians to have those patients appear on your list. The selected relationship lists will appear in the box labeled Name. You can rename your list by deleting and retyping a name in the box. For example, Admitting Physician, Attending Physician, Consulting Physician can be replaced with Rounding List or any other name that is meaningful to you.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. Select Status and Types of patients to appear on your list. Click Not discharged as the status and click Inpatient as the type. You may also click Emergency, Observation, or Silver Stork if you commonly see patients that fall into these categories. You can select up to 5 types.
  8. Click Next. The proxy window appears, click Next to select Facilities.
  9. Click the facility(s) you want to include on your list by clicking each hospital name.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. The Modify window reappears. Click on the list on the left side of the window. Click the Right/Blue arrow to move the list to the active window.
  12. Click OK. The list will load.

Can I have more than one Visit List?
Yes. Some physicians prefer to see all patients, all relationships on one list while others use multiple lists to separate patients by the type of relationship.

How do I build a Provider Group List?
Use List Maintenance.

  1. Log in and click the tab labeled Patient List.
  2. Click the List Maintenance icon (wrench) on the main toolbar.
  3. The Modify window opens. Click the New button.
  4. The Patient List Type window opens. Click Provider Group then click the Next button.
  5. Scroll and select your group name. Solo practitioners will be added for coverage purposes.
Click on the list (usually named Admitting, Attending.) on the left side of the window. Click the Right/Blue arrow to move the list to the active window.
  12. Click OK. The list will load.

I have a list named SHARED LIST or OFFICE LIST. What is this?
These lists were created by Health Choice and proxied to your office staff. If you do not wish to see this list, then use List Maintenance (wrench) to move the list from Active to Available. Do not delete the shared list if your office staff uses PowerChart. Deleting the list will remove it from their view.

How do I see a patient list for a physician in another group when I'm covering for that physician?
The original physician should proxy his visit list or provider group list to you. The list would then be available for you to activate using List Maintenance.

Why do I have to proxy? It seems like a lot of trouble.
Patient confidentiality must be kept in mind. By having one physician proxy a list to another, it is understood that the original physician has authorized another to view his/her patient list or provider group list. Would you want a competitor, not always a colleague, to freely access your patient list without your permission? Proxy is a form of permission.
